How Do I Use Shackles?

What types of shackles are available to you?

Shackles have two main paths, the body and the pins. The body can have either an anchor shape or a chain shape. Depending on the specific application, each body shape can be used with either a screw pin or a bolt type pin.

When selecting the proper shackle, refer to the manufacturer's shackle safe working load table. The rated load capacity should be printed on the shackle and be visible.

The size of the shackle is determined by the diameter of the bow section, not the size of the pin. Never use a shackle if the distance between the eyes of the shackle is greater than the distance listed in the manufacturer's table.

If using a shackle in extreme conditions, consult the manufacturer.

Use a shackle remover when 2 or more ropes must be placed on a single hook.

How should you inspect shackles?

Inspect the shackle regularly.

Check shackle eyes and pinholes for stretch and wear. Elongation means the metal is being overloaded.

Check that the shackle body is not bent. A bent shackle indicates excessive lateral loading.

Check all shackle pins for distortion, surface stains, wear and fractures.

All pins must be straight and all screw pins must be fully seated.

Replace bent shackles that show excessive wear exceeding 10% of the original diameter or have elongated eyes or shackle pin holes.

Rigging Screw Turnbuckle

What should I avoid when using a release shackle?

Do not use bolts or unknown pins in place of the shackle pins. The load will bend the bolt.

Do not allow the shackle to be pulled at an angle. The legs will open. Pack the pin with washers so that the shackle is centered.

If the pin can be rolled and unscrewed, do not use a screw pin shackle and do not place the pin in contact with moving parts. If the load shifts, the sling will unscrew the release pin.

Do not use round pin release shackles restrained only by cotter pins for overhead lifting.

Do not use a shackle with a bent pin or deformed body.

Do not force, hammer or wedge the shackle into place.

Do not use multi-legged slings at angles exceeding 120 degrees.
